Sherwood Paul Berteau, Sr., 85, a beloved figure in his community, passed away in Belton, Texas, on April 1, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on April 5, 1938, to Leonce, Sr. and Velma Mae Berteau in Springfield, LA, Sherwood lived a life full of love, passion, and dedication to his family and his work.
Sherwood was a dedicated individual who found success as the founder of Temple Towing and the owner of Jeds Gulf Towing Service in Temple. His career was marked by hard work, integrity, and a commitment to serving others. He retired 25 years ago but continued to be remembered for his contributions to the towing industry.
One of the most cherished times of Sherwood's life was when his daughter gifted him a floating camp in Manchac, Louisiana where he lived with his wife Evelyn for six months out of the year for over ten years. Sherwood made ways for them to have lights, heat, hauled water to their home camp, and spent his days doing what he loved most, fishing. It was during one of his fishing trips that he found his beloved dog BoBo, who quickly became his faithful companion. These simple days brought immense joy to Sherwood and Evelyn. This is a time his wife will cherish always!
Sherwood's proudest accomplishments were undoubtedly his family, and he treasured every moment spent with them. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Evelyn Maureen (Scharwarth) Berteau, along with his children: Sherwood Paul Berteau, Jr. (Debbie), Kert John Berteau (Robin), and Sherlyn Ann Berteau Ware (Joe); his brothers, Donald and Kenny Berteau, and his sisters, Rita Drude, Nita Schilling, and Sylvia Crawford. His legacy also lives on through his numerous Grandchildren Jennifer, Kevin, DJ, Shrie, Kenny, Michael Lee, Charles Michael, Mika; his great-grandchildren, Chelle, Remy, Curran, Tyler, Jase Jr., Jepp, Eden, Madison, Alexis, Gavin, Rylie, Ady, Grant, Lexie, Mikael Joe, Brayden Joe, Lynise, Kyler, Allie, Taylin, Mallory, Emily, Austin, Avery, Kael, Autumn; his great-great-grandchildren, Mateo Antonio, and Amelia Ann, numerous family members, and friends.
Sherwood Paul Berteau, Sr. was preceded in death by his brother Leonce Berteau Jr., grandson Sherwood "BJ" Paul Berteau III, great-granddaughter Mikayla JoAnn, best friend, Ellis Ernest and Roy Gamez, nieces Casey and Debbie Billiot, and brothers-in-laws Charles Scharwarth, and Glen Drude.
