Michal Lee Sablich Humphries, known as “Mikie” to most, and Meme to her family, was born on March 13, 1947 to Michal and Norma Lee Sablich in Temple, TX. After 74 years on this earth, MIkie went to meet her heavenly father, on November 25, 2021 and reunite with her parents, husband, Walter, and son, Walter, Jr., who proceeded her in death. Mikie left this life on Thanksgiving Day and being she was never one to miss out on a good meal, imagine the Thanksgiving feast they must have prepared to celebrate her arrival!
Mikie attended school in Temple, where she met her lifelong partner, and eventual husband, Walter. Mikie and Walter wed Dec 28, 1963 and were married for over 58 years. They shared a love and partnership most only ever dream of experiencing. Together they had two children, Michelle and Walter, Jr. 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
If you could ask Mikie what she loved most in her life, she would likely tell you her family, racing and going to see Willie Nelson with her best friend, Ann. Mikie rode motorcycles herself, and in her sixties, rode a Harley back and forth to work. Her heart never grew old. Mikie and Walter were active motorcycle enthusiasts, and participated, along with Walter, Jr. in about every type of racing you can imagine, from hill climbs to motocross to drag racing with some circle track racing thrown in at one point just to keep it interesting. At almost 70 years old, Mikie was still racing her sand dragster. Racing wasn’t the only competition MIkie enjoyed. She also spent years with her daughter Michelle at the rodeo arena, supporting Michelle and her love of horses.
In all things, though, Mikie was a fierce competitor, to say the least, winning was the only option for her, and if a win didn’t occur, well, she’d be the first to find the officials so they could figure out their mistake. That didn’t make her a sore loser, it was just one of the many ways she demonstrated her love, confidence, and devotion to the ones she considered family. In her mind, they were always winners. If you were “hers,” there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do to love and support you, and heaven help anyone who tried to cross you. Mikie was extremely passionate, not afraid to stand up to anyone in honor of her family. Standing all of 5 feet 2 inches, with piercing blue eyes that could cut glass, Mikie never thought of her stature as others might, she was pretty sure there was an error in measurement and she was closer to 6 feet tall, there wasn’t a man or woman of any size that she wouldn’t fearlessly go toe to toe with.
Aside from being a competitor, Mikie was also extremely creative and artistic, with a good head for business. She wrote and published a motocross newspaper while Walter, Jr was racing motocross, owned and ran a tanning salon in Temple for years, where she also displayed and the wood crafts she made, was a master seamstress and thoroughly enjoyed making anything “pretty.” Mikie had a very generous spirit, always wanting to gift you with something, another way she showed her love.
Mikie loved people. She loved to talk and tell people about her family, making sure they knew just how proud she was of her family. If you would give her half a chance, you would hear all about Chad, Cru, Delaney, Thorn, Rhyder, Chev and Harley. It made her happy to share the experiences she had with her family to anyone who would listen, in that way, her cup had always runneth over. Even if you only met her once, she was likely to have made an impression, in one way or another, making her very hard to forget.
