Maxine May (Nickell) Powell, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014. A visitation will be held Sunday, May 18, 2014 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Crotty Funeral Home in Belton. A graveside service will be held 2:00 P.M. on Monday, May 19, 2014 at Wayland Cemetery in Breckenridge. Maxine May Powell was born on December 4, 1927 in Ukiah, CA to McKlewee and Marcella (Parks) Nickell. She grew up in Wichita, Kansas where she graduated with her Bachelor's degree from Wichita State University, having earned a lifetime teaching certificate. She married JW Powell on April 29, 1953 in Wichita and moved to Lawton Oklahoma. She and JW moved to McGregor in July of 1979. Mrs. Powell found pride and joy in being a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing, cooking and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was a happy-gentle spirit energetic, always kind, and giving. She loved children, little animals, flowers, and humming birds. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of McGregor, Methodist Church Women's Circle, Garden club, PTO, and Dem Mother for boyscouts. She was ao proud of her military men in her family. She was preceded in death by her husband JW Powell; parents, McKlewee and Marcella Parks Nickell; brothers, Edward, Richard and Melvin Nickell; and sister, Vivian Marie Hull Gehrer. She is survived by her son, Jay E. Powell of McGregor; son, Dwane D. Powell and wife Kelly of Lorena; daughter, Gwen K. Stanford Marburger and husband, Gary of Onalaska; daughter, Carol A. Love of Eddy; sister-in-law, Eva Nickell of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Crystal Gilmore and husband Steve of Fort Gibson, OK; Robert Stanford and fiance Chelsea of Huntsville, Heather Love and husband Jeb of McFarland, WI; Tiffany Hulkkonen and husband Cameron of Fort Hood; Paden Love of Eddy, and Justin Wakeman of Quitman; great-grandchildren: Holly Powell, Joshua Powell, Sebastien Heidbreder, Gabriel Heidbreder, Jenna Gilmore, Bailey Gilmore, Emily Gilmore, Tyler Stanford, Audrey May Stanford, Ava Tarditi, Emmie Hand, Kaleb Rodriguez, and Valin Hulkkonen; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association and the Leukemia Foundation.
