Elonzo Benjamin Franklyn Hammonds, 82, of Belton passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2021 in a local hospital. Elonzo was born to Johnny Johnson and Edna Mae Battles on February 18, 1938 in Tillar, Arkansas. Elonzo made his career in the United States military, serving both the Air Force and the Army. He retired from the military and settled in Belton, operating Frank's Garage for about twenty years. He helped everyone he could with their vehicles and took care of everyone when they needed his mechanic expertise. He also spent his retirement years from 1986 to 2019 traveling around Texas and going camping. Elonzo was able to make conversation with everyone and never met a stranger. He loved playing with his grandchildren. Elonzo brought dirt bike riding to the family, passing the hobby along to each generation. Elonzo was so very loved by his family and friends and will be dearly missed.
A visitation for Elonzo will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Crotty Funeral Home in Belton. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 9:00 AM at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with Pastor H.K. Ballard officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Disabled American Veterans.
Elonzo is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lamanda Hammonds of Belton; his sons, Stephen Hammonds of Temple, David Hammonds of Albuquerque, NM, Rex Hammonds of Belton, and Lon Hammonds of Temple; his fourteen grandchildren; and his four great-grandchildren.
Elonzo is preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Hamilton and Bobby Hamilton; and his sisters Brenda Medford and Janath Medford.
Arrangements are entrusted to Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Belton.
