Quietly on the evening of Tuesday, November 28, 2023, in Waco, Texas, Donald Clarke Berry, aged 89, departed to his Heavenly home. Born on Tuesday, October 23, 1934, in the city of Charleston, South Carolina, Donald's life unfolded, much as a tapestry, woven with threads of humble beginnings, profound faith, Christian service, and deep love.
His early years were spent in Charleston, where the foundations of his life were laid, attending Rivers High School. A journey that began in the Lowcountry led him to Baylor University in Texas, where, in 1956, he not only graduated but also became a well-loved figure, serving as Permanent Class President and Yell Leader for his beloved Bears. With a spirit of adventure, he would hitchhike back to Charleston, his heart forever tethered to both places.
In his thirst for knowledge and a calling to serve, Don earned his Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Theology and Philosophy from Southwestern Theological Seminary. His life’s work found fulfillment in the churches he pastored across the United States, from Texas to the Carolinas, Florida to Virginia, and others. Through his pastoral and collegiate faculty positions and as President of the Southern Baptist Pastors Conference, he was honored to work alongside many esteemed leaders of his era.
He leaves behind a legacy through his children: Leigh Ann Berry of Texas, Jonathan Berry (Theresa), and Stephen Berry of North Carolina. His granddaughters, Raleigh of Texas, Ashton of South Carolina, and Spencer and Kendall at Baylor University will carry forth his spirit in their own journeys. The ties of family extend to his sister Nancy Dowdy, sisters-in-law, as well as numerous nieces and nephews scattered across the country
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Citadel Square Baptist Church in Charleston on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 10 o’clock in the morning. This cherished place, where he surrendered his life to Christ alongside his brother Dick and later returned as pastor, continued to hold a special space in his heart as it first established his call to faith and service.
In remembrance of Donald Clarke Berry, we are reminded that every life leaves an imprint, a testament to the love we share and the faith we carry. Though he has passed from our sight, his spirit shall endure.
