David Garcia Sanchez, a vibrant soul whose laughter could light up the darkest room, embarked on his final adventure on September 20, 2024, at the age of 67. Born on July 18, 1957, in the bustling town of Killeen, David truly lived his life as if every day was a new episode of Star Trek—always exploring, always discovering, and yes, always ready to beam up to the next big thing.A proud graduate of Watsonville High School in 1975, David didn't just march through life; he charged through it like a true infantry soldier. After high school, he enlisted in the US Army where he completed the Nuclear Biological Chemical Course, The NCO Basic Course and Professional Development Course. This was just part of what would be a 17-year tour of duty in the US Army. During his remarkable military career, he accumulated a chest full of medals, including the Army Achievement, the Army Accommodation Medal, the Good Conduct (a whopping four times). He also received the National Defense Service, and Overseas Service Ribbons (twice)! But let's not forget, David’s tactical knowledge that earned him the Expert Infantryman Badge and his sharpshooting skills that earned him the Expert Rifle Badge—so if anyone could take a shot at humor, it was him. He bravely served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, taking home not just stories, but also three Southwest Asia Service medals and the Kuwait Liberation Medal. And when he traded his army boots for civilian shoes, he cruised into civilian life with his Class A CDL, 18-wheeler driver's certification in hand, as smoothly as any comedian would deliver a punchline. To say David was a family man is an understatement—Not only a was he a beloved husband to Beverly, he was also a loving father to Fabian, Katrina, Adrian, and Kyle, a caring Grandfather to Tiara, Elias, Katyana, Diego, Marcel, Marcus and a loyal brother to Roger and Fabian Scott. He was a companion to anyone who shared his zest for life. There was no better sight than seeing David surrounded by his family, decked out in blue (his favorite color, in case you missed all the Dallas Cowboys memorabilia plastered everywhere) while flipping burgers and steaks on the BBQ grill. David's interests were as vast as the universe he admired on Star Trek. He was as comfortable playing softball as he was knocking down targets in the military—which really just meant he had excellent aim whether he was throwing a ball or a joke. An avid comic book collector and moviegoer, he never missed a chance to indulge in the latest sci-fi blockbuster or martial arts flick, but he was always ready to kick back with the next episode of his beloved Star Trek Life, according to David, was meant to be lived out loud, which explains why he was such an extrovert. Striking up conversations with strangers was his superpower, effortlessly turning them into friends with his infectious laughter and selfless nature. Generous to a fault, but as hilarious as any stand-up comedian, he had a talent for making others feel like they were the stars of the show. Humor coursed through David’s veins—as funny as he was generous and selfless. There was no doubt that wherever he is now, the angels are having a hard time keeping a straight face. His legacy is one of joy, family, and service, creating laughter and memories that echo through the lives of all who loved him. David Garcia Sanchez lived a life that was as colorful as a box of comic books, and just like in those pages, his story may have ended, but his heroics, love, and laughter will forever be part of our own stories. We know he is already in Heaven debating comic books or how the Cowboys are going to win the next Super Bowl. Either way, his infectious personality and playful nature will forever live within our memories. As we look to the stars, we will always remember that he is the brightest one, shining down on all of us. In our hearts, he will always “live long and prosper.”
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Sanchez of Killeen; three sons, Fabian Sanchez of Killeen, Adrian Sanchez of Daly City, CA. and Kyle Leak of San Antonio; one daughter, Katrina Rodriguez of Killeen; six grandchildren, Katyana Sanchez, Diego Sanchez, Tiara Rodriguez, Elias Rodriguez, Marcel Leak, Marcus Leak and his two brothers, Roger Scott and Fabian Scott of Killeen, TX.
