Burl Hammons, 86, of Temple passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at his residence. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 1:00 P.M at Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple with Chaplain Tim Rudolph officiating. Burl was born on September 23, 1931 in Bath County, KY to Noah & Tina Hammons. Burl was fostered and raised by John & Bettie Ward, & foster sister, Vanada Mays. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 1986 from Greensburg Post Office as Postmaster. He also enjoyed working at Wal-Mart in Campbellsville, KY & Belton, TX. Burl married Dianne Johnston on June 23, 1965 in Lovington, NM. Burl enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. Burl was a member of College Baptist Church in Big Spring, Texas. Burl is preceded in death by his foster parents, John & Bettie Ward; sisters, Vanada Mays, Ida Mae Back, & Lulie Tackett; brothers James Hammons, Garland Hammons, & Carl Wheeldon. He is survived by his loving wife of over 52 years, Dianne Hammons of Temple; brother Sam Hammons; his two sons Mark Wayne Hammons of Studio City, CA, Ward Alan Hammons and wife, Bridget of Spring, Texas; his two daughters Julie Cunningham and spouse, Ron of Chino Hills, CA and Cynthia Hammons Campbell and spouse, Jason of Temple, TX; five grandchildren, Cole & Taylor Cunningham, Benjamin & Daniel Hammons, and Devin Campbell and many special nieces & nephews. A special thanks to staff of Interim Hospice of Temple, TX. Arrangements are entrusted to Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Belton, TX.
