Barbara Ann Athey, age 65, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016, after complications following heart surgery. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Theresa Saiger. Surviving is her loving husband of 46 years, Michael Athey of Killeen; her son, Michael James Athey and his wife, Jennifer Wildes of Seattle; her daughter, Shannon Athey-Briggs and husband Kenneth Briggs of Austin; her brother, Peter Saiger Jr. of Kansas City; her sister, Patricia Saiger of Chicago; her nephew, Jeff Saiger of Chicago and his family who she loved dearly; her brother in law, Jim Athey and his wife, Fran Athey of Salado; and all the many friends of Michael and Shannon who called her ""Mom Athey"". Barbara was a loving mother and dedicated military wife. As a military spouse with her husband in the Army for 30 years, stationed in Germany and Texas, Barbara was always active in the military community. She was a proud member of the Officers' Wives Club and volunteered with Family Support Services for nearly 12 years, taking care of families who had a soldier deployed. She received numerous awards for her service to those military families. Barbara was a natural caretaker and nurtured everyone within her generous reach, whether family or friend, or fostering a lucky pet. She loved spreading cheer with her delicious baking and was famous for her Christmas cookies. A private family memorial service for Barbara will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 at Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Belton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA in honor of Barbara Athey. Arrangements are entrusted to Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Belton.
